Manly Beach is located on the Northern Beaches of Sydney and it is famous for it’s great waves and surfing. It’s actually where the world’s first surfing contest was held in 1964, making it one of Australia’s most famous beaches. It’s a tourist hotspot as it’s so easy to get to. You can easily hop on a ferry at Circular Quay and get to manly within 30 minutes.
There are quite a few storm water pipes on Manly Beach that head out into the ocean. It’s probably best not to think about runs through those pipes into the ocean, and just focus on how they make great subjects to photograph.
I had always wanted to take a picture of the Manly pipes towards the southern end of the beach. I picked this particular morning as it was nearly high tide and I wanted the water flowing up and around the pipes, plus it looked like it could be a colourful sunrise. As I was shooting the sky started to go pink and I thought to myself it would be really interesting if I took a long exposure to smooth out the water. So I had to act quickly and put a filter on my lens to block the light which enabled me to capture this image.
This image I am particularly proud of because it was picked to be on the front cover of the ‘Australian Photography’ magazine for the November 2017 issue.
