Merewether Ocean Baths
Merewether Ocean Baths is located in the suburb of Merewether in Newcastle. The area contains a couple of large swimming pools made up of saltwater from the ocean. It is in a stunning region of mossy cliffs at the southern end of Merewether Beach.
I was in Newcastle for work and whenever I travelled for work I always took my camera with me. I had always wanted to shoot these baths as they are so photogenic and make a really interesting composition. The morning I planned to shoot I woke up before sunrise and all I heard was rain. I was really disappointed and I thought to myself it was going to be a waste of time heading out. I sat in my hotel room thinking to myself when am I going to get back here again, I should just go, but the rain was really putting me off. Then I heard thunder and lightning and I thought, gees, I should go, I have nothing to lose, this could be really interesting.
So I headed out in the dark and in the rain thinking to myself, what am I doing. When I got to the baths I wasn’t the only crazy one, there were quite a few photographers also out shooting the lightning. It was pouring with rain and I stood under cover hoping the rain would pass so I could get into position to shoot. Just before the sun rose, the storm moved out to sea and the rain stopped. I ran into position and set up my camera and then I couldn’t believe what unfolded before my eyes. The sun was rising, there was a storm and lightning all in one go. It was the most surreal, incredible shooting experience I had ever had. I would say it was a once in a lifetime experience. My body was rushing with adrenalin and I was praying that my shots would capture the lightning.
In the end I captured one of the most incredible images I could ever had dreamed of. I went on to enter this photo in a few competitions which I won. Most notably I won the sunrise/sunset division of the 2017 FOCUS Photographer awards for this image. Winning this competition had been a goal of mine for a number of years, so I felt extremely proud of my efforts.

PRINT TYPE DESCRIPTIONS
ILFORD Galerie Smooth Pearl – 310gsm
GALERIE Smooth Pearl Paper features the very latest HDR (High Dynamic Range) optically clear nanoporous coating for outstanding imaging performance. The high density heavyweight base has a natural photographic white tint to produce prints with excellent colour gamut and high sharpness.
The pearl surface eliminates glare and finger prints giving the true look and feel of a photographic print.
The photograph will be printed using UltraChrome K3™ ink which can produce archival prints with amazing colour fidelity and gloss level, while providing consistently stable colours. Incorporating high density pigments, Epson UltraChrome K3 produces prints with an extremely wide colour gamut allowing the reproduction of colours that were originally envisioned at the point of capture.
METTALIC Pearl – 250gsm
This paper has to be seen to be believed, it’s really gorgeous. It’s a high gloss media with a remarkable metallic pearl finish. With the right images it can really make them sing like no other paper – with a highly three dimensional look.
This paper offers exceptional image clarity and brilliant colour reproduction with a high-gloss metallic finish.
The photo is mounted to the back of a UV resistant acrylic glass sheet, creating an airtight bond and letting you view the image through a crystal-clear glossy surface. This mounting process preserves your images from scratching and fading and creates a near 3-D stunning visual effect. It also gives the image more depth and colour saturation due to the clarity of the acrylic sheet.
The image is backed with a white 2mm Dibond to add rigidity and use an aluminium sub frame to float it from the wall. Because of the different light penetration and refraction of acrylic glass compared to normal glass, the colours are more brilliant and the image sharper than compared to standard glass in a picture frame.
The image is printed on metallic paper for a pearl like finish. It comes with an easy hanging system and hanging bracket so you can put it up on your wall with ease.
The canvas prints are printed using the finest quality archival inks on cotton canvases.
The canvas prints are coated with an invisible polymer coating which creates a water resistant surface and further protects colours from fading. This finish ensures no glare or reflection and retains the texture of the cotton canvas.
The canvas is stretched around a timber frame and it is ready to hang.
