Stockton Sand Dunes
This photo I took is at the striking and most impressive Stockton Sand Dunes in the Worimi Conservation Lands at Anna Bay in Port Stephens.
The beautiful sandscape is forever changing. Created thousands of years ago, it’s the largest moving coastal dunes in the Southern Hemisphere and they are spectacular. The Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, in the Worimi Conservation Lands, cover 4,200 hectares, 1,800 of which are forest, as well as 32kms of the longest moving sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. These truly awe-inspiring dunes reach heights of over 30 metres with slopes of up to 60 degrees to form a majestic landscape are ideal for sand-boarding, an exciting activity all year.
I went there with a group of friends for a weekend away and I had always wanted to take shots on the mighty sand dunes.
One morning I headed out without my camera and explored the sand dunes for 3 hours before it got too hot. I knew it would be hard work trudging through the sand, so I wanted to explore them first and find compositions to shoot so I would know where to go the next day without having to carry my heavy gear while I explored. I found some great compositions and this was one of them.
The golden light at sunrise as it hit the sand dunes was spectacular. It was extremely hard work walking through the sand and up hills, but it was so rewarding and an incredible experience. It is so peaceful being there and you feel like you are on top of the world where no one can find you.
